Robart Hinge Help

This was something I did a couple of years ago

for those using Robart Hinges. Now keep in mind

if the panels still catch ,take some almn. scraps

and cut them to fit the base of the hinge.Test

fit between hinge and whatever your trying to open then glue as needed.That should do the trick.

On 3 Legs

Four days before Christmas ( 2009 ) we put the legs on

R2 and it turned out nicely.Since then I've taken the legs

off and started to work on the electronics, mind you this

part is still fairly new to me .

Mods to frame

One of the mods done was to use the old JAG Stopps
( a personal choice ). Todd and I had fun with that one.
We also carved places for the hinges and accsessories
to fit.

Update on frame

Here's a look at our old broken frame to the left and the one Calvin made for

christmas 2005 with a Dremel on the

back portch of our Appt. The frame

cracked at the top and bottem rings

in August 2009 at Mini-MegaCon.

In October 2009 Calvin delivered

Hello,Keith here with our first posting. I want to thank Calvin for creating this Blog for us ( it's our first ).You've helped us out so much w/R2 in the last three months, I don't know how to thank you. And to Todd for the use of his workshop,again I don't know were we'd be without your help. The two of you gave me the kick in the tail I needed to get going.

Frame Delivered

We took the frame to Orlando and it's in Keith's hands.
I hope it turns out correct and it works out for them.
I did the best I could and there will be some finish work.
It was a interesting task.
I'm going to try and find out if this blog can be put in Keith's
hands so he can continue where I left off.

Flex No More

I made Keith a new A&A center foot caster plate.
The one on the right is the A&A and the one on the left is the aluminum plate.
The A&A kept flexing to much and was just unstable, So here's the new one.

Getting Closer

We worked on the frame some today and started gluing some of the parts together.
I'm running out of time to get the frame complete, So it's full steam ahead.
Some of the parts needed will have to be added later and some will have to be made in a different fashion.
Even though these parts will come at a later date, They will perform just as the original way.
I plan to leave the top plate unglued so finishing touches can be done later.
I also plan to give the frame to Keith on October 16, Next week so he can start fitting it to his droid.

Here a Notch - There a Notch

Boy, I tell you those notches are a pain.
I used my jigsaw to cut them and it was fairly easy, There's just allot of them.
You can see in the side pictures, I need to route the groove for the supports to fit straight.
But it's looking better and better.

Side Supports

Here's a couple of pictures of the side supports in the frame.
I still need to cut the slots into the supports, But you can see the front and the side how they mount.
Not much more and the frame is complete.

Something Standing

I cut the side plates today and I get to see it standing for the first time.
I still have to do some routing to the side plates.
I also noticed these gaps in the area where the sides fit.
I rechecked everything and my measurements are correct, So why are these gaps
here?
I'll have to ask Victor :o)

More Top Plate

I got alittle routing done to the top plate today.
The only routing left is for the Large Data Port area.

I almost made a mistake on the size of the center hole cutout.
You can see the inner pencil mark and that's the one that's wrong.
I should have this area cut soon.

I routed some of the spots on the top plate and the pictures show how the 4 main vertical supports line up.
These are the one's I was worrying about not making the cut.

Top Plate

I managed to get the top plate cut today.
I'll start the routing soon and then cut the main supports.
I have enough 3/4 birch for the parts I need, But I need some 1/2 birch.
So far there is no money involved in this project, Just gotta find 1/2 birch.

Quick Note

I marked the measurements for the top ring and layed the bottom ring facing down
on top of the top ring and the marks and cuts line up for the verticals
will join.
This should tell me that I'm headed in the right direction, At least for the
4 main verticals.

Finished Base Plate

I have the base plate complete except for a couple of pockets.
I'm worried about the slots for the vertical supports.
I measured everything twice, But when I hold a styrene skin around the front it seems like the verticals could have been alittle off.
I'm not use to this frame, So they could be correct and I just don't know it.

Base Plate Routing

I managed to get more done today.
There's a lot of routing to do on these frames and I still have more.
I sure hope I'm heading in the right direction with the cuts.
You can see here/there I sliped and have some Boo-Boo's.
But I think as long as I don't cut anything in the wrong place I'll be OK.

Bottom Base Plate

This is the 3/4 Base Plate for the frame.
I have it all marked and ready for routing, But I ran into a problem with the measurements for the goody pockets.
I'm getting help from Victor since he is the Master of wood frames.
As soon as I know which measurement is correct, I'll have this plate complete.

Router Jig

I've made a router jig that will allow me to cut the 18 inch rings from 3/4 birch.
They make a jig you can purchase for this reason, But it will be the only wood frame
I build so I made a homemade jig.

The plate attaches to the bottom of the router and has a central pin for the correct
diameter needed.
I will post some more pictures soon.

This Blog is for the 2 Best people I have ever known.
Keith & Carolyn are just the kindest and most thoughtful people in the world.
They are in the process of building a R2D2 and was getting closer to the completion
and the frame they built broke.
So, We decided to help them with the build of a new frame.
This Blog will only show how the frame is built and the progress of the build.

Keith & Carolyn, I hope this you enjoy the frame and it will help you complete
your Droid.
